On Saturday 22nd March the Cambridge Academy of Science and Technology opened its doors to over 1500 enthusiastic members of the public for the Cambridge Festival Big Biomedical Campus Open Day.
Attendees took the opportunity to try their hand at a wide range of activities spanning three floors and run by many of the research institutes, departments and businesses based on the Biomedical Campus.
Early Cancer Institute volunteers joined with the other institutes and programmes of the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Centre offering a Cancer Zone with a wide range of exciting and interactive activities such as Codon Crowns, the Odd Sock Game and Blood Soup.
Our fantastic team of three researchers, Lucy Faulkner and Henson Lee Yu (Dev Group) and Daniel Jacobson (Fitzgerald Group) led the search for Epigenetic Needles in a Haystack, hunting for elusive cancer markers in a large pool of cfDNA.
They interacted with hundreds of visitors, young and old, and explained the science brilliantly in simple terms. One visitor commented, “My daughter [age 8] has been saying for a while that she would like to be a scientist, and this has been a brilliant day. She has seen so much science and has really been able to get hands-on experience.”
Perhaps we will welcome her in the future as a researcher at the Early Cancer Institute!
