Early Cancer Institute

Professor Antonis Antoniou

Congratulations to Antonis Antoniou who has been appointed to lead the development of a proposal for the Cancer Data Driven Detection (CD3) Initiative.

Cancer Data Driven Detection is a proposed new, national research initiative dedicated to using data to revolutionise our understanding of cancer risk and to allow early interception of cancers. CRUK are leading the project with support from Health Data Research UK, The Alan Turing Institute and the Economic and Social Research Council’s Administrative Data Research UK programme. Professor Antonis Antoniou, is leading the development of this programme over a one-year build phase.

Antonis has collaborated with the Early Cancer Institute as an affiliate for a number of years. His team works at the Centre for Cancer Genetic Epidemiology (CCGE) in the Department of Public Health and Primary Care to develop powerful, user-friendly, web-based prediction tools for patients and clinicians. For example, the CanRisk tool (www.canrisk.org) for breast cancer incorporates information on multiple genetic risk factors, behavioural, hormonal, reproductive, clinical and imaging risk factors.

Antonis has been heavily involved in the CD3 Initiative and was a driving force behind its inception. He believes the initiative is exactly what is needed to move the field of data-driven cancer detection forward, and will provide a much deeper understanding of who is most at risk of developing cancer and thus greatly advance our ability to prevent, detect and diagnose cancer early.

CRUK caught up with Professor Antoniou to talk partnerships, team science and the challenges facing implementation of all this data clout. Read the full interview on the CRUK Website: Harnessing the power of CD3

Workshop

CD3 will be holding the first workshop to convene leading experts in the fields of health data sciences/analytics/early detection/evidence based implementation science etc. on Monday 11th September in London and they are now welcoming applications using the CD3 workshop registration link.
