Join researchers and staff from the Early Cancer Institute on Saturday 18th March to get hands-on with cancer research in Cambridge.

The Cambridge Festival includes over 360 in-person and online events from Friday 17th March to Sunday 2nd April 2023.

The Cancer Research UK Cambridge Centre will be in the CAST Building on Saturday 18 March from 11:00am – 4:00pm giving you the chance to learn more about the ground-breaking cancer research being undertaken by scientists and clinicians across Cambridge!

The Early Cancer Institute will be running two fun activities which will help you to learn more about early cancer detection and treatment. First you can play Sherlock Holmes: Cancer Detectives, which is our special version of ‘Guess Who’ to see if you can identify which characters have early-stage cancer using the clues on the cards and a UV torch to discover an early detection test score.

Our second activity allows you to get really hands-on as you perform a Jellybean Endoscopy! Use the endoscope to look into our “oesophagus”, represented by a container of red jellybeans, and see if you can find the rogue (different colour) bean. This bean represents a potentially problematic area of the oesophagus that could, if left untreated, become cancerous. If you can spot the different bean, you can try to remove it with special forceps, using the endoscope lens to guide you. In a real patient this is called endoscopic resection.

There will be many more interactive exhibits from our partner institutes and programmes at the CRUK Cambridge Centre including experiments, informative demonstrations and plenty of fun activities for children and adults of all ages, such as:

  • Extract DNA from strawberries and learn about mutations that could cause cancer
  • Discover how to ‘see’ tumours in medical scans
  • Practise your operating skills on a jelly brain
  • Step inside a virtual reality tumour
  • Find out how our ‘Virtual Child’ will help us understand how cancer develops in children
  • See how we are changing the story of cancer with our plans for a new Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital
