Planning permission submitted for East of England cancer hospital

A full planning application to build a new specialist cancer research hospital for the region on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus has been submitted to Cambridge City Council. The new Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital (CCRH) will change the story of cancer. It will bring together clinical and research expertise in a new-world class hospital for the East of England to detect cancer earlier, treat it more precisely and save more lives.

DNA graffiti: mutation patterns in cancer - watch the Francis Crick Lecture given by Serena Nik-Zainal

Professor Serena Nik-Zainal was awarded the Francis Crick Medal in 2022 and recently gave the prize lecture at the Royal Society. In the lecture, she explains that human cancers are highly individual. Etched into the DNA of cancers are graffiti-like mutation patterns, which could reveal underlying biological abnormalities, unique to each person’s cancer, with potential for application in precision medicine. Prostate cancer risk prediction algorithm could help target testing at men at greatest risk

Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men. According to Cancer Research UK, over 52,000 men are diagnosed with the disease each year and there are more than 12,000 deaths. Now, Cambridge scientists have created a new, comprehensive tool for predicting an individual’s risk of developing prostate cancer, which they say could help ensure that those men at greatest risk will receive the appropriate testing while reducing unnecessary – and potentially invasive – testing for those at very low risk.
