Cambridge early detection researcher announced as a Fellow of the Royal Society

Professor Douglas Easton is one of three CRUK Cambridge Centre members to be elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2022. Irene Debiram-Beecham highly commended in RCN awards

Congratulations to Irene Debiram-Beecham for being Highly Commended at this year’s Excellence in Cancer Research Nursing RCN Nursing Awards. Irene, principal research nurse in the Early Detection Programme and ACED Clinic Cambridge Coordinator, led on the rapid clinical implementation of the Cytosponge test during the pandemic when endoscopy services were severely reduced. She developed a new robust training programme and provided ongoing support for nurses, clinicians and health care professionals across the UK.

Professor Rebecca Fitzgerald has received the Don Listwin Award for Outstanding Contribution to Cancer Early Detection. Fitzgerald is a Clinician Scientist internationally recognised for her exceptional research into the prevention and detection of oesophageal cancers, in particular her work to develop the Cytosponge - a simple but ingenious way to test for Barrett’s oesophagus - a condition that can be a precursor to oesophageal cancer.
