On Tuesday 2nd September we had the pleasure of hosting multi-award-winning science communicator Dr Kat Arney at the Early Cancer Institute.
The visit was organised by ECI Science Book Club members Lucy, Filipa and Tamsin who introduced Kat, gave a summary of her book 'Rebel Cell - Cancer, Evolution and the Science of Life' and then led a fascinating Q&A session with some brilliant discussion and engagement with the audience.
Kat answered a wide range of questions including her thoughts on precision medicine and 'magic bullet' treatments, how diamondback moths led to the idea of adaptive therapy and how we may need to learn to actively manage cancer rather than 'cure it'.
Later in the afternoon, Kat ran a workshop entitled Storytelling for Scientists, sharing gems of wisdom on science communication with our early career researchers. She also kindly signed copies of her book and talked with many of our staff and students about her career. Thank you to Kat Arney for supporting these activities, we so enjoyed having you at the ECI.
