Early Cancer Institute

Dr Joshua Barnfather

Date: Tuesday 30th May 2023
Time: 17:30-18:30
Venue: Murray Edwards College

Following his talk on the Biomedical Campus, from 12:30-13:30, Joshua Barnfather will be hosted by the President Dorothy Byrne of Murray Edwards College, Cambridge for an "In Conversation with.." event.

Dr Joshua Barnfather has a rare genetic disorder called Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP). Patients with XP have a low tolerance for exposure to ultraviolet radiation and are at high risk of developing skin cancer.
Josh will tell us about his cancer journey, and how personalisation of cancer care through whole genome sequencing (WGS) impacted his outcome. This was at a time when WGS was not available like it is today through the NHS Genomic Medicine Services, and he crowd-sourced funding for his cancer treatment.

Josh is also an amazing nuclear engineer who was responsible for developing the robotics that was used in the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear decommissioning efforts in Japan. He lives in Hull and will be visiting Cambridge for the day. https://www.c4di.co.uk/news/2022/2/15/the-robot-man-innovating-in-the-nuclear-industry-and-beating-cancer
