Cancer Interception
Theme leads: Rebecca Fitzgerald, University of Cambridge; James Reading, University College London; Irene Ghobrial, Dana Farber Cancer Institute
The Cancer Interception theme aims to deliver early detection of pre-cancerous changes and sufficient understanding of their biology and trajectory to inform future interventional strategies (e.g. drug, immunological, surgery, ablation, vaccination) to intercept at the earliest time and prevent their progression to cancer, whilst at the same time avoiding overtreatment.
This theme will attempt to discover and validate marker signatures of pre-cancers and deliver biological insight into these pre-cancers which will suggest targets for preventive intervention. This will enable a step-change in our capability to intervene, beyond behavioural modification, to prevent lethal cancer.
